Tomas Machac upsets Djokovic in Madrid
Czech tennis player beats world number one in final clay-court warm-up before Roland Garros
Machac, ranked 44th in the world, defeated Djokovic 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 in the final of the Madrid Open on Saturday.
The win is Machac's first against a top-five opponent and is the biggest of his career. It also gives him a confidence boost heading into Roland Garros, which begins on Sunday.
Machac is a rising star in the tennis world. He won the junior Wimbledon title in 2018 and has since climbed the rankings quickly. He is currently ranked 44th in the world and is expected to continue to rise in the rankings in the coming years.
Djokovic, meanwhile, was playing in his first tournament since winning the Australian Open in January. He had a bye in the first round and then defeated Grigor Dimitrov and Felix Auger-Aliassime to reach the final.
The loss is a setback for Djokovic, who is looking to regain his top ranking. He is currently ranked second in the world behind Daniil Medvedev.
